Vorvady House is privileged to have the best of both brawn and brain among its members past and present. Be it academics or community services – arts, science, medicine, engineering and arts – the Vorvadians have carved a niche for themselves in their respective disciplines.
On top of the list is Dr Belle Monappa Hegde, son of Vorvady Shankar Hegde and Belle Chandravathi who was the first Bunt to be awarded a top civilian award – the Padmabhushan – by the Government of India in 2010 for service to the community. He also is a Gold Medalist in academics from the Universities of Madras and Lucknow.
Dr B. M. Hegde is a former Visiting Professor of Cardiology, the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University of London and Affiliate Professor of Human Health, University of Northern Colorado, U.S.A.
Dr B. M Hegde was also Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, Manipal.
He is presently Editor-in-Chief of an acclaimed international medical quarterly called the Journal of the Science of Healing Outcomes. (Yes, he rubs shoulders with the cream of international worthies including Nobel Laureates and political leaders).
Among other Vorvadians who have excelled in academics and in profession are:
Dr Surendra Shetty, son of Kolyar Bommaya Shetty and Vorvady Shantha who won a Gold Medal in Dental Surgery from Manipal. He is presently Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Manipal University, Mangalore.
Dr Ashok Shetty, son of Kaup Bhojaraja Shetty and Vorvady Suvasini who won a Gold Medal in Cardio-Thoracic Surgery from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. He did his MCH in the same College. Dr Ashok Shetty is presently Professor of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery in Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore.
Dr Shailesh Shetty, son of H Mahabala Shetty and Vorvady Sumavathi was the best All Round Performer making it to the Roll of Honour in the year of his graduation from school in Sandur. Dr Shailesh Shetty is presently practising in Los Angeles, USA.
Smitha Shetty, daughter of Aikala Dinkar Shetty and Vorvady Usha, is first Rank holder with Gold Medal in Clinical Psychology in her post-graduate studies from Mysore University. She also has completed Masters in Psychotherapy and Counselling from Manasa Educational Foundation for Mental Health and Kuvempu University,Shimoga. She currently working as Asst Professor in Psychology in the Graduate Department of Psychology in School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore.
Dr Rajesh Shetty, son of Mohan Shetty and Vorvady Shubhavathi, is working as a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Essex Neuro Science Centre which is part of Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals, one of the largest multi-speciality associated teaching acute trusts in London. He has completed advanced training in Anaesthesia in UK and advanced training in Intensive care in UK and Australia. His qualifications include MBBS, FRCA, FJICM (Aus) and FFICM (UK). He likes playing tennis and running (yes, he is preparing for London marathon), and his hobbies include swimming, flying, sky diving and bungee jumping.
Mahendra Shetty, son of Dr J N Shetty and Vorvady Manorama, is the first Bunt to win the prestigious 56th Filmfare Award in 2011 for Best Cinematography for his work in the acclaimed film "Udaan". He studied Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) at Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA), Mysore and was trained under many reputed cinematographers before attempting his first full length feature film ‘Super Star’ in 2008. ‘Udaan’ is his second independent assignment as a cinematographer.
